When the world was celebrating Woodstock, the Governor of California was Ronald Reagan.
During the first term governor, Reagan was often involved in clashes with the protest movements of the time.

In 1969, during the riots at People's Park in Berkeley, the governor met with the Rector Edwin Pauley to discuss ways to end the protests. At the end of the California Highway Patrol sent agents to restore order on campus. On 15 May of that year, the riots were aggravated and agents resorted to firearms.
